    An armed police operation in a Taranaki town appears to be over


    Police were called to Hawera after a man with a firearm was seen damaging a car about 8.30am.

    Cordons were put in place in the Waihi Road area and the Armed Offenders Squad descended on the town.

    NZ Herald reporter Ilona Hanne says police have lifted the cordons but there's been no sign of an arrest.

    She says the AOS has now left a house on Waihi Road.
