The 28-year-old was part of a smuggling ring, that originally intended to take the almost 24 kilos of drugs from South America to Australia.
After the ring was busted across the Tasman, he tried to bring the drugs to New Zealand.
The man was arrested after police seized a backpack containing cocaine at a Paihia youth hostel, in Northland's Bay of Islands.
The drugs were worth as much as 10.8 million dollars.
