More than a hundred firefighters and support staff are involved in battling two major blazes at either end of the country

More than a hundred firefighters and support staff are involved in battling two major blazes at either end of the country

Crews have contained about 80-percent of the perimeter of the 280 hectare fire at Wanaka's Emerald Bay and hope to fully contain it tonight.

Firefighters are also racing to strengthen containment lines at the 24-hundred Waiharara wild fire in the Far North, with strong winds forecast for Thursday.

People are asked to stop swimming in untreated dams being used to support the firefighting effort.

Meanwhile, residents of Motueka, near Nelson, are being urged to wash off any ash left behind, after a fire broke out in a building with asbestos this morning.

Anyone with smoke inhalation symptoms is urged to call their doctor, and anyone who is breathless or has chest pain is urged to call 111.
