    It's understood people on a charter vessel that capsized in Kaikoura were wearing life jackets


    Our newsroom has been told a breaching sperm whale flipped the boat at Goose Bay, claiming the lives of five photographers on Saturday morning.

    A source has told us a whale surfaced directly underneath the boat.

    Six people including the skipper were thrown overboard, but five were trapped underneath the upturned hull.

    The close source tells us the 11 on board had life jackets, a standard procedure for fishing charters, and there was also a safety briefing beforehand.
