Holiday hotspots are gearing up for New Year's Eve celebrations
31 December 2022
It's the first time since the pandemic hit, that Kiwis have been able to celebrate the occasion, with open borders and very few restrictions.
Police will be patrolling hotspots like Mt Maunganui, Whangamata, Waihi and Mahia - and setting up checkpoints to catch drunk drivers.
Tens of thousands of young people have flocked to Gisborne for the Rhythms and Vines festival - and to Mangawhai - for Northern Bass.
Kaipara Mayor Craig Jepson says he's never seen Mangawhai busier.
He says it's marvellous to see people revelling in the sun - with car parks around the beaches full and people having to walk, cycle or bus in.
