About 300 people were attending a hangi on Grey Street in the Horowhenua town yesterday, when a stolen car lost control.

The ute slammed into several parked cars - and narrowly missed a young woman pushing a pram, according to one witness.

He says dozens of people descended on the young driver before police intervened - with one officer suffering a head injury in the arrest.

The man has been charged with unlawfully taking a vehicle, driving while disqualified and dangerous driving.
