Residents in Coromandel have been warned to prepare for wild weather as ex tropical cyclone Lola moves towards northern parts of the country

Strong wind and heavy rain warnings are in force for Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and Tairawhiti.

Thames-Coromandel Civil Defence controller Garry Towler says this weather could be significant so people should batten down the hatches.

Residents are also urged to stock up on supplies, batteries and gas, and to check and clear drains in their neighbourhood.
