Thousands of people are without power around Auckland this morning, as the remnants of Cyclone Lola passes through

Strong winds could cause commuters chaos around the region, with an amber alert issued for the Harbour Bridge.

The tail of the storm has triggered MetService weather warnings for Northland, northern Auckland, Coromandel and Gisborne.

Waka Kotahi says wind gusts could reach up to 90-kilometres per hour, which may force lane closures and speed reductions over the Bridge.

Drivers in Hawke's Bay and Tairawhiti are also being urged to plan ahead for heavy rain - and be prepared for road closures at short notice.

The wild weather caused pockets of power outages across Northland and upper Auckland last night, including large parts of Waiheke Island.

And the speed restriction on the bridge has just been lowered to 50 kilometres an hour.

Traffic flow is down to four lanes in each direction.
