A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in place for Selwyn and Ashburton

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in place for Selwyn and Ashburton

MetService says its radar has detected severe thunderstorms near Rakaia and Te Pirita - which are moving east.

They're expected to be accompanied by torrential rain and hail - which could could cause surface or flash flooding, damage crops and make driving conditions hazardous.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in force for Canterbury Plains, Canterbury High Country, North Otago, Central Otago and Dunedin.
