The reopening of State Highway 1 through Mangamuka Gorge has brought a raft of benefits

The reopening of State Highway 1 through Mangamuka Gorge has brought a raft of benefits

The key stretch leading to Kaitaia and beyond was opened just before Christmas, after it was closed for more than two years due to about 30 major slips.

Te Hiku ward Far North District Councillor Felicity Foy says it's been great for freight, as the detour route added an hour to every journey.

She says with the gorge re-opening and reducing that travel time, more money's being put in the pockets of their businesses.
