When is the 2025 Met Gala? Where can I watch it in Australia?

The annual Met Gala in NYC is a dazzling collision of celebrity, fashion and media frenzy. Here's what to expect this year.

The first Monday in May is not just any old, typical Monday.

It's the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit.

    AKA the Met Gala.

Who's who in the pop culture sphere will walk the 2025 Met Gala steps in what has become one of the biggest red-carpet moments of the year.

Here's what you need to know.

    What is the Met Gala?

On paper, the Met Gala is a fundraising dinner for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (better known as the MET) in New York City.

It coincides with the opening of a new exhibition in the gallery.

But it's essentially a big fashion event where celebrities dress up in elaborate outfits.

It's run by Vogue, the major international fashion magazine.

    When is the Met Gala?

    Monday, May 5.

What time is the Met Gala?

The whole thing starts at 6pm on Monday in New York.

Because of the time difference, that'll be the morning of Tuesday, May 6 in Australia.

Here's when it'll kick off in each state:

    • 8am AEST: ACT, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria
    • 7.30am ACST: Northern Territory and South Australia
    • 6am AWST: Western Australia

    Where can I watch?

You can stream over the internet via Vogue.

The magazine will be broadcasting it on its website, as well as on YouTube and TikTok.

Coverage will also be blogged live right here on the ABC News website.

What's the 2025 Met Gala theme?

The 2025 Met Gala theme is "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style".

It's in line with the Costume Institute's spring exhibition of the same name.

The theme is inspired by Monica L Miller's 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.

The exhibition will "present a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy", according to a statement from the Met.

    What's the dress code?

The dress code is Tailored for You.

It's a nod to the exhibition's focus on menswear and suiting that's sure to bring out the sartorial creativity of this year's guests.

Think sharply tailored suits, creative twists on classic menswear and bold statements.

This may be one of the first years of the gala's history where ball gowns and dresses might be the less prominent wardrobe choice.

    Who is hosting?

The co-chairs for the 2025 Met Gala are all Black men known for their style:

    • Pharrell Williams — creative director of menswear at Louis Vuitton
    • Colman Domingo — actor who is a force to be reckoned with on red carpets
    • Lewis Hamilton — Formula 1 driver who brought high fashion to the sport
    • A$AP Rocky — rapper who puts fashion at the forefront alongside partner Rihanna

NBA star LeBron James will serve as an honorary co-chair and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour will reprise her presiding co-chair role.

Reviving a tradition from years past, the 2025 Met Gala will also have a host committee, including the likes of Usher, Regina King, Simone Biles, Ayo Edebiri and many more.

    What stars are going?

The magazine is always tight-lipped about who's attending — the guest list is always kept a secret up until the night before.

What we do know, though, is that about 450 guests go each year, with many of them being key pop culture figures.

Think actors, musicians, models, fashion designers and athletes.

What were the stand-out looks from last year?

    I'm glad you asked!

Here are some of the stars that turned heads at the 2024 Met Gala:
