He failed to stop after being spotted driving dangerously on the Southern Motorway near East Tamaki, and wasn't pursued.
He stopped in Glen Innes, and pointed an AR-15 style assault rifle out the window, before driving at speed to a nearby reserve.
He allegedly pointed the gun at Police, before being disarmed by a family member.
Police say he was under the influence of substances, and they're not ruling out further charges.
