Fire crews are responding to a fire at Waikaraka, near Whangarei

Fire crews are responding to a fire at Waikaraka, near Whangarei

The fire has taken hold in dense bush with neighbouring properties either side.

Residents in Onerahi are reporting a strong smell of smoke, and large plumes of smoke coming from the hills behind Whangarei Heads Road.

A helicopter with a monsoon bucket has been seen flying towards the fire.

Whangarei mayor Vince Cocurullo says he's receiving a briefing from emergency services.
