A Christchurch rapist's been released on parole without undertaking any sex offender treatment

A Christchurch rapist's been released on parole without undertaking any sex offender treatment

Two years ago, Matthew Elliot was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for raping the best friend of one of his siblings in 2005.

Elliot denied a charge of rape but was found guilty by a jury, which he is now appealing.

The Parole Board deemed Elliot a low risk, citing his exemplary behaviour in prison and community support.

It noted there's no obvious need for any offence-related treatment.

The survivor's told our newsroom it should be mandatory for sex offenders to do a program to face the harm they have caused.
