State Highway 6 east of Nelson, State Highway 57 and 56 north of Shannon, along with many local roads have been closed, or impacted.

Foxton and Shannon residents have been asked to urgently conserve water, and many flights in and out of Nelson are cancelled.

MetService forecaster Thapi Makgabutlane says severe weather events like this tend to be more likely during the warm summer period.
