Alex de Minaur loses to Carlos Alcaraz 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in Rotterdam Open final

Australia's Alex de Minaur pushes Carlos Alcaraz to a third and deciding set in the Rotterdam Open final, but the four-time major champion prevails to claim his 17th career title.

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz has claimed his first indoor title, beating Australia's Alex de Minaur 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the Rotterdam Open final.

The four-time major champion overcame a cold to claim his 17th ATP Tour tournament victory and first since winning in Beijing in October.

At 21, he is the youngest man in history to win a title on clay, grass, hard court, and indoor hard court.

De Minaur finished runner-up for the second consecutive year in Rotterdam. However, he will equal his career-best world ranking of number six following his run to the final.

World number three Alcaraz broke De Minaur in the third game of the ATP 500 tournament showpiece clash, before losing serve himself as the opening set was levelled at 4-4.

Alcaraz, however, broke in the next game and then took the first set.

Third-seeded De Minaur powered to a 3-0 lead in the second, which went with serve until the world number eight levelled the match.

Alcaraz, pushed into a decider for the third time this week, took control when he broke for a 4-2 lead and proved ruthless as he took the title in his Rotterdam Open debut.

"It has been a really good week," Alcaraz said in his on-court interview.

"Coming here … not feeling 100 per cent well with the cold, every day I felt better and better.

"Thanks to [my team]. All the people back home as well, I just want to say thank you."
