Mid-2022, Grey Lynn locals alerted police to a man with a shotgun, firing shots at unoccupied properties.
He ignored three police who told him to drop his weapon, and they shot him in the abdomen.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority says that was appropriate, and Police acknowledge its finding.
Auckland City District Commander, Sunny Patel, says the officers acted quickly to protect the community.
