Dunedin City Council is promising current upgrades around the city's main retail hub won't cause disruptions during the Christmas period

George Street, is midway through a multi-million dollar upgrade aimed at enhancing the heart of the city.

Underground pipe upgrades on Malls Block and New Edinburgh Way have been completed -- above-ground work on the blocks is now underway.

Despite concern from residents -- the council has confirmed much of the current work will be completed by early December - with other works to wind down for the Christmas period.

The entire project is expected to be finished in April next year.
