Spanish police call off search for missing British teenager Jay Slater called off in Tenerife

The search for 19-year-old Jay Slater, the 11th person to go missing on a Spanish island this year, is called off by authorities in Tenerife nearly two weeks after he was last seen.

The search for a missing British teenager on the Spanish island of Tenerife has been called off by local authorities, nearly two weeks after he was last seen, but police say the case remains open.

Jay Slater, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer, is the 11th person to go missing on a Spanish island this year.

Mr Slater was seen among the hordes of young tourists in Playa de las Americas in Tenerife on June 16.

He phoned a friend the next morning saying he was lost, dehydrated and his phone was about to die.

It was the last time anyone heard from him and a search operation was launched.

His phone was last traced to the Masca ravine in a remote national park in the north of the island.

Spanish police, mountain rescue teams, sniffer dogs, drones and helicopters have been used in the search for Mr Slater.

"The search operation is no longer active, but the case is still open and there are several lines of investigation," a Civil Guard spokeswoman told Reuters.

"The search has gone on for many days because it is a rocky area that is hard to access."

Some volunteers joined police and other rescue workers to form a team of more than 30 people who combed the area on Saturday.

'Lost in the mountains' with low phone battery

Mr Slater attended the final night of the New Rave Generation music festival at Papagayo nightclub on June 16.

A friend he was travelling with, Lucy Law, wrote on a GoFundMe page that she left earlier than everyone else that night after feeling tired from the weekend festivities.

She said that Mr Slater had met two people that night and went with them to their apartment.

It is believed Mr Slater left between 3am and 6am.

A photo posted to his Snapchat at 7:30am showed the door of a property and tagged Rural de Teno National Park, a remote northern area, as his location.

He then called Ms Law saying that he had missed his bus and planned to walk back to their accommodation. On foot, it would have taken 11 hours across the island.

At 8:15am, he phoned Ms Law to say that he was "lost in the mountains, he wasn't aware of his surroundings, he desperately needed a drink and his phone was on 1 per cent".

Ms Law said he did not have suitable clothing for either the extreme heat of the day nor the cold nights in the area.

The last confirmed sighting of Mr Slater was by a woman whose brother owned the cottage the two festival goers Mr Slater had gone home with had been staying in.

She said he had asked about bus times, before she saw him leave Masca, the village the property was located in.

His phone last recorded his location at 8:50am in the Rural de Teno National Park, a more-than-8,000-hectare area made up of mountains, valleys, cliffs and some of the deepest ravines on the island.

He has not been seen since.

The case drew significant attention online, with rumours of a body being found and "the Moroccans" being blamed for his disappearance in edited posts deeply upsetting Mr Slater's family.

Both of his parents had travelled to the island to help with the search and rescue effort.
