Wild black bear found sleeping inside woman's car in rural Ontario after 'revenge' break-in

An Ontario woman is left with a hefty repair bill after a bear breaks into her car, rips the upholstery apart, and then falls asleep.

A Canadian woman has been left hundreds of dollars out of pocket in repair costs after repeat car break-ins by a nuisance bear.

Kayla Catherine Seward, who lives in the rural Ontario township of Larder Lake, was this week met with a large black bear snoozing in the front seat of her Honda in an encounter she described as a plotted "revenge".

A video taken through the car's misty windscreen shows the drowsy bear nodding off in the vehicle as Ms Seward and her husband whisper outside.

"We have a 'friend'," the caption reads.

Photos of the aftermath showed chew marks throughout the upholstery, foam ripped out of the seats and shredded to pieces, and the mangled insides of the doors.

Ms Seward told the ABC she assumed the bear had opened the car door handle with its mouth, before apparently getting locked inside.

Bear had 'revenge' on its mind

While the sight may have left most people astounded, for Ms Seward it was a familiar one.

She said the same wild bear broke into her car last year and had to be removed by wildlife officers, before returning on foot from 200 kilometres away to wreak damage on other cars in the household.

"It walked all the way back with revenge," Ms Seward said.

"The bear got into my car, my husband's truck and mother-in-law's car, and the ministry [of Natural Resources and Forestry] brought the trap again but was unsuccessful.

"Normally they are no problem, honestly, but this one was known to be bad."

The same bear, identified by tag tracking data, was involved in all three incidents.

Wild black bears in Canada roam around widely but usually do not pose a threat to humans.

Parks Canada estimates more than 380,000 reside in the country but encounters like Ms Seward's are typically restricted to rural areas.
