Israeli air attack on Syria's southern region kills two people, Syrian state media says

Syria says Israel has attacked sites across the south of the country, with two people dead.

Israel has launched an "air aggression" targeting a number of sites in Syria's south, killing two people and injuring a soldier, Syrian state media says.

State media said the attacks happened around 11:40pm local time on Wednesday, with multiple air raids on a number of sites.

"Our air defences intercepted the enemy's missiles," Syrian media reported, citing a military source.

Israel has been carrying out strikes against Iran-linked targets in Syria for years but has ramped up such raids since the October 7 attack by Hamas on southern Israel.

Israel has occupied the Golan Heights since capturing the strategically important region from Syria during a 1967 war, but only Israel and the United States recognise it as Israeli territory.

At least five Lebanese civilians were injured in an Israeli air strike that destroyed a residential building in the city of Nabatieh, about 20 kilometres from the Israeli border, Lebanese state media reported.

Reports said the Israeli raid caused damage to dozens of homes and cars.

Israel's military and militant group Hezbollah have been trading fire for months across Lebanon's southern border amid rising tensions over Israel's invasion of Gaza.
