    For the first time in a decade, the annual road toll is expected to be below 300


    NZTA's provisional road toll for 2024 is 288.

    Last year there were 337 road fatalities - and the number hasn't dipped below 300 since 2014.

    AA road safety spokesperson Dylan Thomsen says tough economic conditions may be a factor.

    He says when economic times are tougher, a reduction in road crashes is often seen.

    Meanwhile, there have been nine road deaths this holiday road toll period, since Christmas Eve.
