Otago Regional Council is assessing the potential effects of earthquakes in the Clutha Delta area

An assessment has found properties, including in Balclutha and Kaitangata, could be affected by liquefaction in a large earthquake due to the soft sediments making up the ground.

It found in the largest case, a 'rare' magnitude seven earthquake centred near Clutha Delta, could see severe ground shaking, and extensive liquefaction and ground deformation.

While the likely scenario would result in light to moderate shaking and only have minor impacts.
