There's a call for action on the inequities Maori face in the healthcare system

An Auckland University study analysed hospital records from the Lakes and Bay of Plenty regions between 2014 and 2018.
It found Maori are 43 percent more likely to be admitted to hospital due to healthcare complications than non Maori
It also found they're a third more likely to be admitted to hospital with healthcare treatment injuries.
Study co-author Dr Joanna Hikaka has a position on the issue.
She says they need to monitor for health inequities -- but also take action to address them.
