Environment Canterbury's opted not to include a Maori constituency in the 2025 local elections
23 November 2023
Current representation is through 16 councillors, 14 elected from seven constituencies -- plus two Ngai Tahu representatives.
Chair Peter Scott, says a Maori constituency has been previously considered, and it was felt then, the best and most appropriate representation was directly from mana whenua.
He says nothing's changed to alter that view.
Council must review representation arrangements every six years.
