It's thought a fresh approach is needed in treating Maori with eating disorders

It's thought a fresh approach is needed in treating Maori with eating disorders

An Otago University study's found Western body ideals of thinness, and societal pressures reinforcing 'pakeha looks' lead to heightened body insecurities.

It recommends a more culturally informed psychological assessment model.

Co-author, Mau te Rangimarie Clark is hopeful the findings raise awareness of the disorder within the Maori population -- and the best approach to take.

He says a system's needed which can address multiple underlying causes, like mental illnesses, and issues with healthcare access.
