Police have recovered the body of a Northland man who never returned from a solo kayaking trip

The man had gone for a kayak on the Ruakaka River, south of Whangarei, yesterday morning.

His kayak was later found upside down - prompting police to begin a joint search with Surf Life Saving.

The man's body was found near the Princes St boat ramp.

A rahui's in place on the river until Thursday.
