Cyclist George Bennett is calling for road races to be safer for riders

Cyclist George Bennett is calling for road races to be safer for riders

The 33-year-old Kiwi is coming off a nasty crash during the Tour of Switzerland in June - which forced his retirement fromf the race.

Swiss rider Gino Mader died following a crash the same event a few days later.

Bennett says some parts of road races need to be looked at, such as downhill racing.

Bennett is part of a five-strong New Zealand contingent competing in tonight's men's road race at the World Championships in Glasgow.

    The race starts at 8:30.
