The Government's putting the call out for players to break-up the supermarket duopoly

The Government's putting the call out for players to break-up the supermarket duopoly

A formal Request for Information's been issued to potential challengers, in New Zealand and overseas -- to compete with the main grocery countries in a bid to drive prices down.

The Government's asking what investors might need for a new competitor to enter the market, or an existing competitor to scale up.

Also on the table are considerations of a "structural separation" of existing entities in the grocery market -- such as a de-merger of existing brands.

Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis , says there's more than 600 supermarkets in New Zealand today.

She says someone might be looking at 60 to 70 stores, if they wanted 10 percent of the nationwide market.
