Aratere won't be able to continue crossings once demolition begins on its Picton wharf - as soon as October.

It'll make way for infrastructure for new ferries, due in 2029.

Interislander Executive General Manager, Duncan Roy, has confirmed a formal consultation around possible impacts is starting with staff.

Passenger and freight bookings are being transferred to other ships.
