James O'Connor will assume the playmaking duties for the Wallabies as they seek to build on their third-test win over the Lions with a victory away against the Springboks to start the Rugby Championship

The 35-year-old is back after a three-year hiatus.

Plans to share the number 10 role were shelved after Ben Donaldson was injured in training.

O'Connor's inclusion is the only change to the starting XV that defeated the Lions in Sydney a fortnight ago - he comes into the side after Tom Lynagh was concussed.

Australia are seeking their first win at Johannesburg's Ellis Park since 1963.
