New research from the US has found Covid vaccines available here are still effective -- especially against hospitalisation and death

But their effectiveness has dropped as new variants come through.
The study compared covid outcomes in about 1.8 million Americans - about 12 percent of whom had been boosted or vaccinated with jabs targeting a particular subvariant.
Those vaccines are currently used here.
Comparing with the general population - researchers calculated those jab were more than 50 percent effective against symptomatic infections after four weeks.
