The number of closed book GP clinics is rising

Victoria University researchers have found 36-percent of general practices weren't enrolling any new patients in 2024 - up three-percent from 2022, despite reduced COVID-19 pressures.

While it's worsened in parts of Northland and the southern South Island, things have improved in Taranaki and Whanganui.

Co-author Dr Jackie Cumming says the Government needs to take a look at what's worked in those areas that have improved.
