A radiologist has told a Dunedin court an infant's rib fractures don't indicate abuse

A radiologist has told a Dunedin court an infant's rib fractures don't indicate abuse

The trial of a high-profile sportsman accused of causing the baby's 13 fractures is continuing at the Dunedin District Court today.

US-based paediatric radiologist Dr Julie Mack told the jury the swelling seen on scans could have equally occurred in non-severe scenarios, including minor trauma or routine handling.

The evidence challenges Crown expert, Starship Hospital's Dr Russell Metcalfe, who argues the infant's multiple displaced rib fractures and soft tissue swelling are consistent with severe trauma
