Worksafe's rejected a bid to look into rugby player safety - following the death of a player, linked to concussion

Worksafe's rejected a bid to look into rugby player safety - following the death of a player, linked to concussion

Billy Guyton was the first New Zealand rugby player to be diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy - after his death in May 2023

His father, John Guyton, had sought intervention from Worksafe on the pitch - as he'd felt Rugby New Zealand wasn't doing enough to protect its players.

But Worksafe's responded - stating that, while professional athletes are workers, NZ Rugby's best placed to handle player safety.

It says it doesn't have the resources or expertise to intervene - and the most it could offer would be health and safety inquiries.
