The Chip Ganassi driver was forced to retire after colliding with the left wall on turn eight.
He'd locked tyres with Pietro Fittipaldi but told Sky Sport an early move from Kyle Kirkwood was to blame.
The incident all but ends Dixon's push for a seventh championship - he was third in the standings prior to the race, 65 points behind Alex Palou.
