    The South Island is celebrating snow, skiing and sunshine this weekend


    Today's opening of the Remarkables ski field in Queenstown marks the beginning of this years ski season - Coronet Peak and Cardrona welcomed its first skiers on Thursday.

    Meanwhile, Canterbury's Mt Hutt opened yesterday.

    The Remarkables ski area manager Ross Lawrence says people are eager to get into it.

    He says the clear, calm day could entice up to two thousand people to the slopes.
