A wide ranging weather system is causing mass disruption in the upper North Island, ahead of the long weekend

Ex-Cyclone Tam's strong gales are felling trees, tearing up homes, closing roads and cut power for tens of thousands of Auckland and Northland homes.

At least 26 flights have been cancelled or delayed out of Auckland Airport this morning on what's expected to be the busiest travel day domestically.

Ferries in Auckland Harbour have also faced cancellations this morning.

MetService Meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane there's also been heavy rain in parts too.

She says in the Coromandel and Northland ranges the streams are starting to rise, raising the flood risk.
