Charlie Hunnam is set to star in Ryan Murphy's true crime anthology series 'Monster'

The 44-year-old actor will play serial killer Ed Gein - who is also known as the Butcher of Plainfield - in season three of the Netflix show

Ryan, 58 - who is the series co-creator - confirmed the news during a promotional event in Los Angeles for the second season of 'Monster'.

Season one of the show centred on the notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, while the second season of the anthology series focused on the story of the Menendez brothers and the murder of their parents.

The third season - which is set to begin production next month - will feature Charlie as the notorious murderer, who dug up graves from a cemetery near his home and created household items and clothing from the human remains.

Gein's story has already inspired various well-known film characters, including Norman Bates in 'Psycho' and Buffalo Bill in 'Silence of the Lambs'.

Charlie previously starred as Jax Teller in the crime-drama series 'Sons of Anarchy' between 2008 and 2014.

And the actor later acknowledged that the show changed the course of his life and his career.

He told PEOPLE in 2020: "Frankly, it gave me a career. And it gave me the ability to have confidence that I was going to be able to make [acting] work as a lifelong career."

What's more, Charlie believes that the hit TV show helped him to develop his acting skills.

He said: "I think I went into 'Sons of Anarchy' being a pretty unaccomplished actor in terms of my skill set. I wasn't one of these people that were born enormously and innately talented. I had to really cultivate a skill set.

"And where I cultivated a lot of that skill set was going to work and shooting ten pages a day on 'Sons of Anarchy' for seven years. I feel like that was my college days.

"I went in knowing very little about the process of acting and came out knowing a little bit more."
