Owen Cooper thanked his parents for "creating me" as he scooped the Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series gong at this year's Gotham TV Awards

One of the most talked episodes of the miniseries involved Owen's character, 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for the murder of his school classmate Katie Leonard (Emilia Holliday), and Erin Doherty's forensic psychologist alter-ego Briony Ariston.

While accepting his prize at the ceremony, Owen paid tribute to Erin - who was also nominated for the award - and said she deserved to share the accolade with him.

He told the crowd: "The main person that I have to thank is Erin, who is also nominated for this award.

"That episode that we did together, it was easy to do it with you and it was such an honour to share this, share this award with you.

"You deserve this award just as much as I do, so round of applause for Erin please.

"And I also want to thank Philip Barantini, Joe Johnson, Stephen Graham and I want to thank Hannah Walters.

"I just want to thank everyone that was part of the 'Adolescence' cast and crew, everyone that was there.

"Who else, my parents for creating me.

"Yeah, but that's about it. Thanks to Gotham Awards for handing me this award."

While Owen didn't officially share the prize with Erin, he did with Dying for Sex's Jenny Slate, who also won the gong in a rare tie.

As well as Owen's personal success, 'Adolescence' scooped the Breakthrough Limited Series prize, and his co-star Stephen Graham won the Outstanding Lead Performance in a Limited Series award.

The only nomination the show didn't win was Erin's for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series, which went to Owen.

Teenager Owen has been tipped for to win Best Supporting Actor at the Emmy Awards, which would see him become the youngest-ever male winner in the category.
