Martha Stewart will never wear "open-toed shoes" to another basketball game after her footwear choice left her with a broken toe

The 84-year-old star was at courtside for New York Knicks game earlier this year when she suffered a broken toe after Jalen Brunson landed on her foot.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she warned: "Never, ever wear open-toed shoes to a game like that when you're sitting on the floor.

"He stepped on my big toe. It was like in the last five minutes of the game with the Pacers."

Unfortunately for Martha - who "knew it was broken" - the game went into overtime, and she had to suffer in pain until it was finished.

She added: "[It was] even more painful because I couldn't get up and leave to go take care of my toe."

Martha joked she made sure the NBA star's parents what he'd done.

She quipped: "He didn't know he broke my foot, but he broke my foot. I told his parents. I met his parents. They were laughing. They thought it was so funny."

As well as courtside footwear, Martha has also given fans advice on finding the perfect pair of jeans.

The lifestyle guru - who is the face of American Eagle's Give Great Jeans Campaign holiday campaign - insists good quality denim "forms the foundation" of an outfit and can "go from casual to refined in seconds" as long as they fit right.

She explained to PEOPLE: "Let the denim do the heavy lifting. It's one of those remarkable fabrics that goes from casual to quite sophisticated with just a few thoughtful touches.

"A well-fitted pair of jeans forms the foundation of a look that can go from casual to refined in seconds."

Martha went on to insist "the fit is the most important" part of picking the right pair of jeans, adding: "You can have the most beautiful fabric and impeccable construction but if the fit isn't right I'll never wear them."
