Water Safety New Zealand's urging councils to look at the risks of all open water, after the inquest into a toddler's death

Water Safety New Zealand's urging councils to look at the risks of all open water, after the inquest into a toddler's death

A coroner's calling for vigilance after four-year-old Nia Lohchab drowned in Tauranga's Memorial Park Fountain in 2023.

Water Safety Acting head, Gavin Walker, says caregivers with more than one child can easily get distracted.

He commends the council's modification of the fountain, and encourages other councils to apply the lessons learnt to their own situation.
