When does the Paralympics opening ceremony start? What you need to know ahead of the Games

Planning to tune in to the Paralympics? Here's a guide to what you can expect and when the key events are scheduled.

    When do the Paralympics start?

The Paralympics will run from August 28 to September 8 in France – that makes it August 29 to September 9 for Australian viewers.

Where can I find the schedule?

A total of 23 sports will be featured in the Paris 2024 Paralympics schedule.

Many of those consist of a variety of events.

Where can I watch the Paralympics?

The Paralympics will be broadcast free-to-air on Channel 9 and 9Gem.

There will also be 20 live channels dedicated to the Paralympics on 9Now.

ABC Sport will also be live blogging events as they unfold.

    When is the opening ceremony?

The opening ceremony took place in the early hours of August 29 for Australian viewers.

Paris was awash with colour as a procession of athletes moved along the Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Elysées.

    When is the closing ceremony?

If you tuned in to the Olympics, you'll know the time difference made watching live a little tricky.

The Paralympics and its closing ceremony will be no different.

The closing ceremony will start at 8pm on September 8, Paris time, which means it will be early on Monday, September 9 in Australia.

Here's when it will start for your time zone:

    • 2am AWST: Western Australia
    • 3:30am ACST: Northern Territory and South Australia
    • 4am AEST: Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria

Organisers say the closing ceremony will bring together "24 of France's top DJs" for an "electro party" theme.

    Who is representing Australia?

Australia is sending 160 Paralympians to compete in Paris this year, including 61 athletes who will make their Paralympics debut.

The team will be co-captained by eight-time Paralympic medallist in athletics Angie Ballard and triple gold medallist in Para-canoe Curtis McGrath.

Track and field star Madison de Rozario and swimmer Brendan Hall will be the opening ceremony flag bearers.
