    The holiday road death toll has risen to nine, with two fatalities in the latest serious crash


    About 12:40 this afternoon, two people died north of Mangaweka, in Manawatu-Whanganui, and three others have been severely injured.

    Yesterday two people died in separate crashes in Murupara, near Whakatane, and Waipapa in the Far North.

    It follows deaths in Napier, and Te Puru in the Coromandel, on Friday, and in Gisborne on Boxing Day.

    Two people also died on Christmas Eve: one in Tauranga and the other in Wharehine, near Wellsford in the North.
