Three people and two dogs stranded in a cable car over the Whanganui River have been successfully rescued

Central Fire and Emergency shift commander Alison Munn says they received several phone calls about the incident last night, responding with one crew from Whanganui.

The cable car stretches across the river roughly between State Highway 4 and Parakino, about 25 kilometres from Whanganui.

Emergency services says everyone involved was on safe and dry land by 8:45 pm.
