Open Justice reports Francis Bronson Freemantle broke into the building about 1am one morning in March, but told Police he had no real plan once inside.
The 38-year-old made himself a coffee, then used keys to company vehicles he found in the office - to take two cars over two hours.
They're worth about 110 thousand dollars - and were found with attempts made to remove the sign writing.
Freemantle was arrested that same day.
He's been sentenced in the Christchurch District Court to 15 months and two weeks in prison.
