Heavy rain and northwest gales are expected for parts of southern and central New Zealand, this weekend

Metservice says an active low pressure system is moving across the South Island from the Tasman Sea late Saturday and into Sunday.

An orange strong wind warning is in place for Canterbury High Country from 7pm Saturday until 3am Sunday with northwesterlies gusting 120 kilometres per hour in exposed places.
