Rihanna is raising her children to be "outside and in nature", in tribute to her late father

The 37-year-old singer - who has sons RZA, three, and Riot, 23 months, with her partner A$AP Rocky, and they have another child on the way - lost her dad, Ronald Fenty, on May 30 aged 70, but she has thanked her late parent for "preparing" her to have two sons

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at The Smurfs premiere in Los Angeles, she said: "I've always dreamed of what type of grandfather he would be to them, because of the favourite parts of my dad.

"It prepared me for having two boys, really.

"The adventurous side of me, the outside side of me, the daredevil - it's how I want to raise them.

"I want them to be outside and in nature. No tablet babies."

Rihanna admitted the best part of her childhood was exploring outdoors "barefoot and free".

She added: "That was the funnest part of my life and my childhood, running around outside barefoot and free.

"You don't get to do that anymore."

It was recently revealed Rihanna's father died of cancer and other serious illnesses.

According to a death certificate obtained by TMZ, Ronald's death certificate listed acute respiratory failure, pancreatic cancer and aspiration pneumonia - a bacterial lung infection - as well as two kidney conditions, acute renal failure and acute tubular necrosis.

Rihanna had endured a rocky relationship with her father when she was growing up, and was at the centre of a public battle with him when he spoke to the press after she was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009.

However, the in the years that followed, she noted that she had "repaired" her relationship with her father and had to learn to "come to terms" with things that had gone in in the past.

She told Oprah Winfrey: "He taught me everything, and as awful as he was to my mom, at times, it didn't compare to how great he was as a father.

"And I had to come to terms with that, and I was able to close that gap with him."
