A coroner is warning of the risks of hiking in steep and wet terrain, after a well-prepared and experienced tramper died in 2023

A coroner is warning of the risks of hiking in steep and wet terrain, after a well-prepared and experienced tramper died in 2023

Terrence Elliott, a 54-year-old Irish tourist, ventured off-track in Wairarapa's Tararua Forest Park, and fell down a steep gully.

He activated his personal locator beacon and was found a few hours later, but had fatal internal injuries.

The coroner's described the accident as a "simple slip," and also warns of the additional risk of travelling alone.
