Matt Smith has spilled that filming on Star Wars: Starfighter has wrapped - and he is confident it's going to be a major hit

The 43-year-old actor stars alongside Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, Simon Bird and Daniel Ings among a lengthy cast in the movie, which is being directed by Shawn Levy who helmed Deadpool and Wolverine, Free Guy and The Adam Project as well as serving as an ex ecutive producer on Netflix series Stranger Things since 2016.

Despite the apparent fatigue amongst the Star Wars fan community for recent projects from Disney - who bought Lucasfilm and the rights to the sci-fi franchise as well as Indiana Jones from George Lucas for approximately $4.05 billion in 2012 - Smith is certain this film "has legs" and will please devotees of a galaxy far, far away.

Appearing on UK daytime TV show on Friday (12.12.25), Matt said: "I finished a film yesterday (11.12.25), Star Wars. Ryan Gosling is in it, who is just fabulous, it's really exciting. It's directed by Shaw Levy who did Stranger Things, he's just fantastic. I think it's going to be really great, actually. I think it's got legs."

Although Matt believes Star Wars: Starfighter will be a hit, he bemoaned his current "daft haircut" which he had to have to portray his character.

He added: "I finished that yesterday. They had to cut my hair for it. That's why I've got this daft haircut."

Smith is no stranger to the sci-fi and fantasy genre having previously appeared in superhero movie Morbius and franchise sequel Terminator Genisys, but he will always be best known for playing the titular Time Lord in BBC series Doctor Who.

Matt owned the key to the TARDIS as the Eleventh Doctor for four years and even though he departed the role in 2013 he is still recognised as the Doctor by fans, something he is immensely proud of.

He said of the show: "That's one of the best things I've ever done and will ever do. I'm really proud of that show.

"Although at airports its, 'Oh, you didn't bring your TARDIS mate.' 'No I didn't, otherwise I wouldn't be queuing up with you.'"

Smith was asked by host Alison Hammond if we could ever reprise his role as the Eleventh Doctor, to which he replied: "You never know. I'll have a word."

Star Wars: Starfighter is set five years after the events of 2029 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, in which Daisy Ridley as Jedi Rey defeats the resurrected Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) and takes on the moniker Skywalker carrying on the legacy of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), his father Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and Ben Solo (Adam Driver), the grandson of Anakin, nephew of Luke and son of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford).
